3PL Services Tips #8 – Rich Boland, Client Services, Precision Group
If you’re searching for a 3PL partner in Melbourne, you’re usually trying to solve one of three problems: you’ve outgrown your current space, fulfilment is distracting your team from growth, or customer expectations for speed and accuracy have risen. Choosing the wrong provider creates hidden costs — stock discrepancies, slow dispatch, preventable returns, and customer churn. Here’s a practical checklist to evaluate 3PL providers before you sign.
1. Location: it’s about routes, not proximity
What actually matters is access to major arterial routes, consistent carrier cut-off times, and the ability to serve metro Melbourne, regional VIC, and interstate efficiently. Ask any provider to explain how their location supports your delivery SLAs.
2. WMS: don’t accept ‘we have one’ as an answer
A good Warehouse Management System is the backbone of accuracy and reporting. Look for barcode-based picking, real-time inventory visibility, auditable processes, and API integration with your eCommerce platform. Ask to see the workflow live.
3. Accuracy: ask for proof, not promises
Pick accuracy is something every provider claims is excellent. Ask for measured data. A credible 3PL can show their error rate, explain how errors are defined, and describe their root-cause process. Barcoding SKUs on receipting is the single biggest driver of pick accuracy.
4. Dispatch speed: define ‘fast’ in writing
Agree on dispatch SLAs in writing — standard windows, peak rules, and inbound-to-dispatch timelines. Providers should commit to a 72-hour turnaround from stock receipt and explain what happens when they miss SLA.
5. Scalability and value-adds
Can they flex staffing during peaks? Do they support kitting, branded packaging, and returns handling in-house? Reducing handoffs to third parties reduces friction and failure points.
6. Reporting and client service
You want daily visibility into order volumes, exceptions, and inventory movements without chasing. Ask for an example KPI report. Ask who your named contact is, and what the escalation path looks like.
