By Rich Boland, Precision Group on 2nd October 2026
Charity printing and mailing is where Precision Group started, and it is the work we are the most proud of. In 2008, Cory Hall started Precision with a charity as his first client and eighteen years later, that charity is still with us. They are woven into how we turn up for work.
In the last couple of days the fundraising and print sectors has had the difficult news with the closure of Sydney-based printer and mailing house COJO. A company many charities relied on, so their closure makes it all the more difficult. We are very sorry for their team because we have always held their work for charities high regard. That news has made us reflect on our work for charities and why our Group CEO, Cory drums into us just how hard fundraisers work and how hard we have to work for them.
What charity printing and mailing involves
Producing a fundraising appeal depends on many moving parts:
- Offset printing for high-volume, and predictably stable content.
- Digital and inkjet printing for versioned, short-run and personalised work.
- Print on demand, so you print what you need, when you need it. Our guide to print on demand versus print in advance explains when each one makes sense.
- Hyper-personalisation and variable data printing, including ask amounts, impacts made and the important work left to do.
- Mailing, from data preparation through to personalising, enclosing and lodging with Australia Post. And advice on optimising your mailing file to reduce the price increases from Australia Post. Our mantra is “fewer and better” seems to work well here.
- Survey scanning, so returned responses can be captured and fed back into a CRM.
- Fulfilment and 3PL, for storing, packing and sending whatever your supporters need to receive. Whether that is a purchase from your eStore or your “thank you.”
Most charities need a mix of these so, having them in one place means one supplier, one point of accountability and fewer handovers when a deadline is tight. Something that matters more and more in a world of being more efficient and more effective.
Why charity work is different
Donors choose to give to those causes that matter most to them. It is a very emotional thing. Research from Accenture, commissioned by Australia Post, found that 52% of Australians say receiving mail shows the sender takes the information seriously, compared with 32% for email. We cover this in a bit more detail in our article on why charity mail still outperforms digital appeals if you would care to read it.
If you want more of the research, start with what the research keeps telling us about mail, what Australians do when mail arrives and when unaddressed mail beats programmatic.
We care about the sector and we care about the work
Precision has been a member of the Fundraising Institute Australasia (FIA) since 2014 and is a long-standing supporter, sponsor and contributor. Cory served on the FIA Victoria committee before stepping back to position Precision as a major sponsor. He has also helped the Fundraising Institute of New Zealand when it needed it. He explains why in his conversation with Terri Sheahan.
Last month Cory signed our submission to the Attorney-General’s Department on the exposure draft of the Privacy Amendment (Personal Data Protection) Bill 2026. It sets out how one provision could affect the way charities recruit donors by mail. And after a recent chat with Dr Cassandra Chapman of the University of Queensland we shared a white paper on AI governance for charities. All really important issues for charities and their partners like us.
Certified, so Finance and Procurement can say yes
Choosing a new supplier takes time, and your Finance and Procurement teams will rightly ask for evidence of good governance. Precision is certified to ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment), ISO 27001 (information security) and ISO 45001 (health and safety). We are also PCI/DSS compliant working with many Australian Banks and Financial institutions.
We are also one of a handful of sustainable printers in Australia certified to Level 3 by the Visual Media Association. Our most recent renewal was our third successful audit at that level, and we wrote about why that paperwork matters. You can see the detail on our sustainability page if you have the time. Warning…it is facts and figures dense!
